Manitoba Hydro Place, at 690,000 square feet is one of the largest office buildings in Winnipeg, Canada. The 22 story “cold weather sustainable” headquarters is the home to 1,800 Manitoba Hydro employees. This tower is the first of the next generation of sustainable buildings that integrate time-tested environmental concepts with advanced technologies to achieve a “living building,” dramatically responding to the local climate.

An Integrated Design Process (IDP) was mandated by Manitoba Hydro to achieve the objectives of 60% energy savings, a supportive workplace environment, urban revitalization, signature architecture and cost effectiveness. The building is already projected to outperform its original energy estimate by 64% savings or more.

This presentation will highlight the design process and the innovative features that contribute to the building’s superior indoor environment and efficient energy use. Areas that will be covered include operable windows used for natural ventilation, a solar chimney, displacement ventilation, daylighting, a geo-exchange system and operating data results.
